Arthroscopic reconstruction of the coracoclavicular ligaments using an allograft*

Acromioclavicular separation

Acromioclavicular separation is an abnormal separation between the clavicle and the acromion, often following a fall onto the shoulder. When the coracoclavicular ligaments are torn, the clavicle may be displaced upwards and the shoulder may lose stability.

Reconstruction involves replacing these torn ligaments with a tendon allograft. The graft is passed between the coracoid process and the clavicle, then secured to recreate a strong support structure.

This procedure is now performed exclusively using arthroscopy on an outpatient basis.

The aim is to reposition the clavicle correctly, stabilise the joint and allow for a gradual recovery of shoulder function.

Following the procedure, the arm is immobilised for 3 weeks. Rehabilitation is gradual: first, a gentle restoration of mobility, followed by strengthening. A return to strenuous activity or sport generally takes place after several months, depending on bone healing and recovery.

The expected benefits are a more stable, less painful shoulder with improved strength. Possible risks include stiffness, persistent pain, partial loss of correction, a rare fracture of the clavicle or coracoid process, or complications associated with any surgical procedure.
