Scapho-trapezoid-trapezoid (STT) osteoarthritis

STT osteoarthritis is wear and tear of the joint between the scaphoid, trapezium and trapezoid bones, causing pain at the base of the thumb and wrist, along with a loss of strength. When medical treatment is no longer sufficient, surgery may be recommended. Depending on your age, your needs and the severity of the osteoarthritis, there are two main options: STT arthrodesis, which involves permanently fusing the three bones to eliminate pain at the cost of a slight reduction in mobility, or the Pyrocardan prosthesis, which replaces the joint whilst preserving more of the wrist’s range of motion. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis, followed by a period of immobilisation and then rehabilitation.
