Complex corrective osteotomy of the distal humerus for malunion
Following an elbow fracture, the bone can sometimes heal in the wrong position: this is known as a malunion.
Corrective osteotomy of the distal humerus involves making a precise surgical cut in the bone to correct the deformity and restore the normal anatomy of the elbow as closely as possible. The correction is planned using a CT scan with 3D reconstruction. The bone is then stabilised using suitable plates and screws until it has healed.
Treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, with early mobilisation during rehabilitation.
This surgery is reserved for complex deformities and is often the best solution for restoring a more functional elbow when the after-effects of a fracture become disabling.
