Surgery for a humped carp

Surgical treatment for carpal hump is indicated when pain persists despite appropriate medical management.

The procedure involves removing the bony protrusion at the base of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals, whilst preserving the stability of the carpometacarpal joints and the tendon insertions. Usually carried out as day surgery, it relieves mechanical pain and restores comfortable use of the hand. A period of rehabilitation may be necessary to gradually regain mobility and strength.
