Surgery for lateral epicondylitis of the elbow

Surgery is recommended in cases of chronic epicondylitis that has not responded to appropriate medical treatment over several months. It involves resecting the degenerative tendon tissue of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon, followed by a controlled partial detachment of its origin from the lateral epicondyle in order to reduce mechanical stress. The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis, usually under local anaesthesia. Rehabilitation begins early, with a gradual return to activities; strenuous activities are generally permitted after 2 to 3 months. The aim is to provide long-term pain relief and enable a return to daily and sporting activities.
