De Quervain’s tendinopathy

De Quervain’s tendinopathy is an inflammation of the tendons of the long abductor and short extensor of the thumb where they pass along the outer side of the wrist. It causes pain at the base of the thumb, which is exacerbated by gripping movements, carrying loads or repetitive actions. Treatment usually begins with rest, a splint, anti-inflammatory medication and, in some cases, an injection. If properly managed treatment fails, an outpatient surgical procedure can be performed to release the tendon sheath and eliminate the mechanical impingement. Recovery is generally rapid, with a gradual return to normal activities in the weeks following the procedure.
