ELBOW – COMPLEX CASE

Reconstruction of the distal biceps tendon using a tendon allograft*

The distal biceps tendon enables the elbow to be bent and, more importantly, the forearm to be rotated upwards (supination, as when using a screwdriver).

 

When the tear is old or the tendon has retracted too far, it is sometimes no longer possible to reattach it directly to the bone. An allograft tendon (a tendon from a donor, processed to very strict standards) is then used to reconstruct the missing tendon.

What does the operation involve?

 

  • An incision is made at the front of the elbow.
  • The retracted biceps tendon is identified and prepared.
  • An allograft tendon is attached to the biceps tendon.
  • The other end is reattached to the radius (the bone in the forearm) using anchors or fixation buttons.
  • The aim is to restore strength and function to the arm.

After the procedure

 

  • A splint is usually worn for a few weeks.
  • Rehabilitation begins gradually, following a tailored programme.
  • Light daily activities can be resumed quickly.
  • Strenuous activity and carrying heavy loads are prohibited for several months.

Expected results

 

This treatment generally helps to:

  • reduce pain,
  • restore elbow flexion,
  • regain a large proportion of supination strength,
  • improve upper limb endurance.

Full recovery often takes 4 to 6 months, and sometimes longer for demanding sporting or occupational activities.
