Total wrist arthrodesis

Total wrist arthrodesis involves permanently fusing the wrist joint using a plate and screws to relieve pain caused by severe osteoarthritis, the after-effects of trauma or certain inflammatory conditions. This procedure results in a stable, strong and pain-free wrist, at the cost of losing wrist mobility. Movement of the fingers and forearm is preserved, allowing the patient to carry out most activities of daily living. The procedure is usually carried out on an outpatient basis or during a short hospital stay, followed by a period of immobilisation and then appropriate rehabilitation.
