Silicone prostheses for finger joints (MCP and IPP)

Silicone prostheses for the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (IPP) joints are used to replace a joint destroyed by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or the after-effects of trauma. Their aim is to relieve pain, correct deformities, restore functional mobility and improve the use of the hand in everyday life.

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis, usually under local anaesthesia. Early rehabilitation, sometimes combined with the temporary use of a brace, is essential to optimise the outcome. Recovery is gradual over the first 3 to 6 months. The main aim is to achieve a pain-free, stable and functional finger, with sufficient mobility for activities of daily living, without seeking completely normal mobility.
