Dupuytren’s contracture

Dupuytren’s disease is a benign condition affecting the palm of the hand, leading to a gradual thickening of the palmar fascia. Nodules and then fibrous bands develop, causing an irreducible flexion of one or more fingers, most commonly the ring finger and little finger. When functional impairment becomes significant, surgery may be recommended. This involves removing the fibrous tissue responsible for the retraction (selective aponeurotomy) in order to restore finger extension. Rehabilitation and the temporary use of a splint may be necessary following the operation. Despite appropriate treatment, a recurrence remains possible as the condition progresses.
